Our Foundation Student-School Suitability (SSSS) Sub-scales

HiScore offers several sub-scales that are embedded in the Student-School Suitability Scale (SSSS) to assist families in their school-choice decision-making and for multiple applications in schools.

Student Attribute Scale (SAS)

The first sub-scale, the Student Attribute Scale (SAS) evaluates nine (9) student psychological attributes, previously deemed difficult-to-observe in schooling contexts but that are pre-requisite for maintaining the child’s motivational force for schooling that impacts on their academic success.

Contextual Preference Scale (CPS)

A second sub-scale, the Contextual Preference Scale (CPS) establishes the students’ contextual socialisation preferences for particular levels of school challenge (demandingness) and nurture (responsiveness) and classifies each child by their preferred socialisation style as compliant, social, self-determined, ambivalent or avoidant. Understanding student socialisation styles allows teachers to align their approaches to positively engage a broader range of students in learning.

School-Culture Perception Scale (SCPS)

A third sub-scale, the School-Culture Perception Scale (SCPS) evaluates existent levels of school supports for demanding and responsive socialising experiences and classifies each school-culture according to Socialisation Theory as; authoritarian, authoritative, indulgent and impersonal in socialising style. Once classified within this socialisation research framework meaningful comparison of different student styles with different styles of school are possible by examining the alignment of components common to both the person and the context.

Schooling Outcomes Scale (SOS)

A fourth sub-scale, the Schooling Outcomes Scale (SOS) measures student outcomes for different styles of students and different styles of schools, based on satisfaction, engagement, motivation, achievement and overall wellbeing criteria. The SOS is a seven component schooling outcomes measure conceived from Martin Seligman’s (2011) Theory of Wellbeing. We evaluate wellbeing as an output of suitable pupil-school socialisation.

Pupil-School Match Scale (PSM)

Finally, the Pupil-School Match Scale (PSM) is a world first. The PSM is dynamically auto-generated by triangulating pupil, parent and school personnel sub-scale data to calculate alignment indices on 18 engagement criterion that predict the suitability of the child-school match with a selection of three "Schools of Choice". Suitability predictions are made on the basis of the relative alignment of each pupil's unique socialisation preferences for organisational standards, interpersonal care and tolerance for individual choice and existing supports for such preferences in the socialising culture of different schools.
